Does Instagram show who shared a link?

Yes. Every link you copy or share out of Instagram carries an identifier called igsh that was generated just for your share and tied to your account. When someone opens that link in the Instagram app, Instagram can show them who shared it, your profile with your name on it, and even prompt them to follow you. That goes for anyone who opens the link, not just the person you sent it to. The one party who doesn't learn your name is the post's author, who only sees anonymous share counts. The igsh parameter, briefly

Copy a link to any post or reel and look at what's on your clipboard:

Beforehttps://www.instagram.com/reel/C8xYzAbCdEf/?igsh=MWZqeDR4d2p0c3hydg==
Afterhttps://www.instagram.com/reel/C8xYzAbCdEf/

That igsh value is not part of the post's address. It's a share identifier, unique to the moment you copied the link. When anyone opens the link, Instagram resolves it back to your account: the app can display your profile to them and suggest they follow you, and Meta records the connection either way. Two people sharing the same reel produce two different links. We cover the parameter in detail in what is igsh. Links copied from Instagram's website may also carry campaign tags like utm_source=ig_web_copy_link, which are a separate kind of tracking.

How to share an Instagram link cleanly

  1. Copy the link as usual from the share button.
  2. Delete the question mark and everything after it, leaving https://www.instagram.com/reel/C8xYzAbCdEf/.
  3. Send it. The post opens normally for everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Does the creator get notified when I share their post?

Not by name. Sharing a post in a DM or by link is private; creators only see share counts in their insights. Resharing a public post to your story is different: the author can see that and it's visible on your story.

Can the person I send an Instagram link to see my username?

Yes. When they open a link carrying your igsh identifier in the Instagram app, Instagram can show your profile, with your name, and even prompt them to follow you. Opening the same link logged out in a plain browser usually shows nothing, which is why many people never notice their links are tagged.

Is igshid the same as igsh?

Yes. igshid was the older name for the same kind of share identifier. Instagram switched to the shorter igsh. Both are safe to delete.

Does deleting igsh break the link?

No. The post address, like https://www.instagram.com/reel/C8xYzAbCdEf/, works fine on its own. The parameter only exists for tracking.
